Based in the sport-focused university town of Stellenbosch, in the Western Cape of South Africa, Ron Jones - a product development specialist, squash player and coach, together with Russell Looms - a biokineticist and part-time lecturer in Sports Science at the University of Stellenbosch, combined their skills in the development of the B4 Play Ball.
During one of his lectures, Russell had demonstrated to his students the value of rolling a tennis or cricket ball underneath the foot on the thick connective tissue supporting the arch of the foot called the plantar fascia, resulting in the release of tension and improved suppleness within minutes.
This concept came to Ron's attention via his son, a student under Russell, and after experiencing the euphoric effect of the exercise Ron immediately saw the potential of a commercially viable product.
He made contact with Russell and after some exciting discussions they joined forces with physiotherapist Mariet Smal, to begin product experimentation and development.
With the expertise of an engineer at Special Plastics Industry and suggestions from Medical R & D, they reached a final product. Consultations and discussions followed with the Medical Research Council, the Sports Science Institute and professional practitioners including physiotherapists, biokineticists, chiropractors, medical doctors, massage therapists, personal trainers, orthotists, prosthetists and various sportsmen and women, many of whom have subsequently started using the product personally and in their practices.
The final product - a rubberised, knobbly ball of ideal density.
B4 Play has moved from strength to strength since those beginnings, regularly bringing exciting, dynamic new products onto the market with the focus on sports training, injury rehabilitation and healthy living.
